Nasimiyu Designs

A native of Kenya, Nasimiyu now resides in California where she pursues her dual passions of jewelry making and philanthropy. In 2003 she founded the born to aid foundation which helps needy children in her native village. A portion of the profits from her boutique are donated to the foundation, and her designs have been shown and sold at other charitable functions including a recent sale in collaboration with the Urban Zen Foundation, co-founded by designers Donna Karan and Sonja Nuttall.

Each of Nasimiyu jewelry pieces is one-of-a-kind, inspired and created by her, using African trade beads as well as other beads. The result is a work of art that carries with it a rich, historical culture and personal story, showing that the magical beauty of the whole is so much more than the sum of its parts. Nasimiyu unique jewelry designs continue to grow in popularity and have become favorites of celebrities including supermodel Christy Turlington and Patti Scialfa Springsteen, wife of "The Boss", rock legend Bruce Springsteen. Suno New York

Max Osterweis has had a successful year, after more than a decade of collecting textiles during visits to Kenya. The prospect that Kenya's recent post election turmoil might keep foreigners from visiting or investing in a country overflowing with natural resources, talent, and good will became the catalyst to actually do something with those collected fabrics. Building a successful and visible company that employs local Kenyan talent, treats workers fairly, and showcases some of Kenya's artistry, could potentially affect positive and lasting social and economic change. Suno Fall collection, while not the first, was the unofficial debut, and retailers and editors have done nothing but gush ever since. Rachel Bilson was snapped in a Suno bubble-skirted frock, view the pictures below:
